Those who want to truly experience the Azores should stay in the typical country houses. Of course, there are also hotels with the usual standards. TourInformation centers – but not on every island.
The largest selection is available on the island Sao Miguel. There are a whole range of hotels, holiday homes, guesthouses and private rooms here.
The search is sometimes more difficult than expected. Signposts are rare. Hotel chains are often fully booked during peak season. But you should never give up, because if the room you want is already taken, your neighbor might have something available.
Hotel:
These are usually found in larger cities. They range from luxurious top-of-the-line hotels to low-rise hostels. Prices typically range from €80 to well over €300 per night. Those who plan to self-cater should make sure they have cooking facilities.
Guesthouse / Residence:
There are very few guesthouses left. They are often rebranded as two-star hotels. Prices and amenities vary greatly. They are usually cheaper than hotels, costing between 2 and 50 euros per night.
House of Hospitality:
Traditionally run by local communities, Casa de Hospedes were nothing more than cheap workers' accommodations. The few remaining ones have mostly been modernized. They complete a true backpacker vacation and guarantee the lowest prices.
Private rooms:
Private accommodations are everywhere. They often have a family atmosphere. All privately rented rooms, apartments, or houses must be registered. Registration is preceded by an examination. Those who pass are placed in the Alojemanto Local category and receive a registration number (RRAL xy). You can identify the accommodations by an AL sign on the exterior facade.
Youth hostel:
There are five youth hostels, one in Ponta Delgada, one in About Us | on Santa Maria, one near Calheta on Sao Jorge, one in Sao Roque on Pico and one on Terceira near Sao Mateus. The hostel in Ponta Delgada is housed in an old mansion. It's very attractive from the outside and generally very clean. You can save money with a youth hostel card. Prices range from approximately €20-50. There are often a few simple double rooms available.
Camping:
Almost all the islands have official campsites. However, some resemble cattle pastures and are sometimes rather uninviting. Sanitary facilities are also lacking. A nice campsite is located on the west coast of Pico. On too Terceira and on the south coast of Sao Jorge There are some beautiful spots. It's advisable to inquire well in advance of your trip, as wind and Weather can sometimes have a detrimental effect on a campsite. Anyone who absolutely wants to camp wild should at least check with the owner beforehand. The best places are nice viewing and rest areas. These usually have barbecue areas and restrooms.
