In the Azores, you can easily withdraw money with your debit card. Here, too, the euro has been the official currency since January 1, 1999, and the legal tender since January 1, 2002.
Bank opening hours are very limited. However, there are plenty of "Multibanco" ATMs, which can usually withdraw up to €200 per day. These are only found in larger towns, however. A withdrawal from your own account usually costs between €2,5 and €4. So, you can skip the need for traveler's checks. They are not common in the archipelago and are not accepted everywhere. Major credit cards (Eurocard, Visa, American Express) pose fewer problems. However, anyone planning to shop in the many small shops will struggle with electronic money. Those with only an EC card needn't worry. However, you should look for the Cirrus or Maestro symbol. You can obtain further information from your bank or financial institution. Postal savings bank customers are also well catered for: With a savings card and PIN, they can withdraw money from ATMs with the Plus logo.
